Don't you see it? First Zidane is a possible Superman we all hope and beleive will save football from descending into defensive dearths - no heart-stopping goals, no great strikers claiming heroic status. Zidane was going to save football from turning into a boring game of walls inpenetrable.
Then minutes away from retirement, someone insults his mother and sister and he throws away the world's regard for family honour and an anti-hero is born. In an instant, he became more Batman then Superman. His darker, less golden past was something he had to defend and like Batman, he can retaliate in an uglier fashion.
On a crazier note, I think Scolari is a dead ringer for the actor Gene Hackman and he can lay claim to two famous roles - in the Italian Job, I think and as Lex Luthor to Christopher Reeves' Superman!
